Polymeric Materials specialization
The Polymeric Materials specialization allows students to gain exposure to the unique properties of polymers. This field of study is critical to development in a number of industries as polymers become used more in areas ranging from sporting goods to bullet-proof vests.
Polymeric Materials curriculum
Students in the Polymeric Materials specialization will take the following courses:
Major courses:
MSE 642 Structure & Properties of Solid Polymers
MSE 643 Molecular Aspects Polymer Properties
MSE 644 Structure & Properties of Composites
MSE 649 Biomaterials Lab
Students will take an additional four MSE non-core 600 level or higher lecture courses.
Technical electives:
Chem 231 Intro to Organic Chemistry
ISE 751.02 Polymer Processing Fundamentals
Two additional courses in accord with the Technical Elective guidelines.

Specialization Application form
Specialization Application forms are due before the start of the last quarter of the Junior year (i.e., typically by the end of Winter quarter of Junior year).
Download Specialization Application (PDF, 88K)
Please read through the Specialization Application, complete the form, and obtain the required faculty advisor signature. The student should then schedule an appointment with the MSE Undergraduate Advisor to review the application. Students may e-mail the MSE Undergraduate Advisor, phone 292-3145, or stop by 477 Watts Hall to set up this appointment.
Career paths:
Students who have completed the Polymeric Materials specialization are well prepared for a variety of fields. Companies such as Proctor and Gamble, Dow, and Dupont are firms which may be interested in a student with a combination of expertise in materials and polymers.
