The Ohio State University

College of Engineering

MSE 795, 899, and 999

MSE 795, 899, and 999 are courses required of all MSE graduate students.

MSE 795, Seminars in Materials Science and Engineering

MSE 795 is a discussion of current thesis problems, outstanding current literature, and related topics. Guest speakers and those of our students in the final quarter of their Ph.D. will present a 45 minute talk on a topic related to their research. These presentations offer our graduate students insight into state-of-the-art research occurring in the discipline.

Talks will be scheduled on a Monday, Wednesday, and/or Friday between 3:30 to 5:18 p.m. and will be held in 264 MacQuigg Lab. Students must attend 795 only when a speaker is scheduled for a given day. View the current speaking schedule.

Registration for this course is required of all MSE graduate students during every AU, WI, and SP quarter s/he is enrolled at Ohio State, unless prior release is granted by the Graduate Studies Committee. Students are permitted up to two unexcused absences per quarter.

MSE 899, Instructional Assistance

A core graduate program educational objective in the department is intellectual leadership. Intellectual leadership involves more than the generation of knowledge through research, but also its transfer through effective communication. We expect our students to be able to teach what they have learned, and to be able to critically judge the technical communications and ideas of others. MSE 899, Instruction in Materials Science and Engineering, provides students with opportunities to meet this important objective while assisting the undergraduate academic program.

MSE 899 credits are earned while serving as an Instructional Assistant (IA). IAs assist the faculty with the instruction of MSE courses. This assistance can take the form of aid in a lab class, recitation, web site maintenance, etc. On average, instructional assistance should take roughly 6 hours of the student’s time per week during the quarter of service.

The MSE 899 series consists of three "classes," ED P&L 692.10, 899.02, & 899.03. The first course, ED P&L 692.10 offered in the Autumn, is a one credit lecture course. It provides students with information on university policies, teaching & learning styles, the design of lessons, assessing student learning, and more. MSE 899.02 and .03--each two credits--provide students with practical experience in a classroom setting while assisting our faculty with the instruction of MSE course work. Students must take ED P&L 692.10 prior to, or concurrent with, 899.02 or .03 service.

Degree requirements:

MS without Thesis (terminal degree) students are not required to serve as Instructional Assistants.

Master's with Thesis students must earn three credits (1 credit of ED P&L 692.10 and 2 credits of MSE 899.02) prior to receipt of the degree. This equates to one quarter of service as an Instructional Assistant.

BS/MS students must earn three credits (1 credit of ED P&L 692.10 and 2 credits of MSE 899.02) prior to receipt of an MS as the final degree. This equates to one quarter of service as an Instructional Assistant. Should the student continue on to pursue a PhD, then an additional quarter of service in 899.03 will be required (see below).

PhD students must earn a total of five credits (1 credit of ED P&L 692.10 and 2 credits each of MSE 899.02 and 899.03) prior to receipt of the degree. This equates to two quarters of service as an Instructional Assistant.

Registration:

Prior to earning service credit in MSE 899.02 and .03 students must enroll in ED P&L 692.10. ED P&L 692.10, the lecture portion of this series, may be taken concurrently with 899.02 or .03.

Prior to the start of each quarter, MSE graduate students will be alerted to the teaching needs for the coming quarter. Volunteers' wishes will be accommodated, if possible, and additional students will be assigned as IAs, if necessary, to meet the department's service needs. IAs will be given assignments with instructions and registration call numbers.

Timing:

Graduate students are generally eligible to assist as an IA after the fourth quarter of enrollment. Students are to take ED P&L 692.10 in the first Autumn Quarter following entrance in graduate program. With enrollment in 692.10 students are then eligible to serve as an IA in subsequent (or even concurrent) quarters.

MSE 999, Research in Materials Science and Engineering

Go to 999 call numbers for the upcoming quarter.

MSE graduate students earning an MS with Thesis or a Ph.D. must earn a minimum of 15 credits of MSE 999 to fulfil the degree requirements (MS without Thesis students are not required to register for MSE 999). Graduate students holding a Graduate Research Associateship (GRA) position are to register for MSE 999 during each quarter of enrollment.

GRA’s are to register for the maximum number of 999 credits per quarter that their schedule will allow (i.e., up to 18). Thus for AU, WI, & SP GRA’s should register for: graded courses + 1 credit of 795 + X credits of 999 = 20 graduate credits per quarter. In SU quarter students should register for: graded courses + X credits of 999 = 18/20 credits (795 is not offered in SU quarter).

Fellows must register for no more and no less than 15 credits TOTAL per quarter (i.e., graded courses + 1 credit of 795 + X credits of 999 = 15 credits per quarter).

PhD students who have passed the Candidacy Exam may register for as few as three graduate-level credits and still be considered full-time. Registration for this minimum number of hours is required in each quarter between completion of the Candidacy Exam and graduation. Go to 999 call numbers for more information.

The number of credits for which a student registers does not reflect the number of hours per week the student will carry out research.
