The Master's degree program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain additional knowledge and necessary skills in a specific area of Materials Science. A thesis option Master's degree is made up of two primary aspects; academic course work and research used to support a written document.

Time frame for completion
The typical length of time for completion of a Master's with Thesis degree while enrolled as a full time student is approximately two years, inclusive of Summers. A student holding a GRA position will combine research and academic study throughout this period. During the final one to two quarters the student's research results are developed into a thesis document which is defended before a two member committee of MSE faculty.
