The Role of the Metallurgist Outside Metallurgy

Abstract

The points made can be applied to ceramics and materials science students as well. ĘThe talk will explore, not what our community does, but rather what our community can do, and why our skills are desperately needed in society.

Bio

Edward J. Vinarcik, P.E., is the Global Quality Manager for the Measuring Tools Division of Robert Bosch.  In 1993, he received his Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from The Ohio State University. Since graduation, Vinarcik has studied lean enterprise methods & quality disciplines. He is certified by the American Society for Quality as a Quality Manager, Quality Engineer, & Six Sigma Blackbelt. In addition, Mr. Vinarcik has completed separate master's degrees in Quality Control and Business Administration. Prior to his current employment, he has served roles in supplier quality, product design, and manufacturing.  In 2006 to 2009, Mr. Vinarcik accepted a position with Bosch in China as a metallurgical laboratory and prototype shop manager.  Beyond his formal employment, Mr. Vinarcik is a writer, publishing a book titled High Integrity Die Casting Processes, & contributing chapters to Taguchi's Quality Engineering Handbook as well as Vol9 of the ASM Metals Handbook. In addition to writing, he has served on several technical committees & chaired the Materials Activity for the Society for Automotive Engineers.  He also enjoys teaching and has taught for the University of Wisconsin & Tri-State University.  In 2006, he was named a fellow of ASM International.
