Franklin H. Beck Sr.
Dr. Franklin H. Beck Sr. age 87, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Franklin is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jean C. Beck; children, Franklin H. (Nancy) Beck Jr., Robert C. Beck, Marian L. (Allen) Shaffer; grandchildren, Sarah (Adam) McCauley, Andrew Beck; great-granddaughter, Olivia; brothers, Merrill (Elaine) Beck, Warren (Carol) Beck; sister, Shirley (Dr. Karl) Dutt. Preceded in death by brother, Dr. Theodore A. (Mary) Beck.
He was a Professor Emeritus, OSU Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, widely known for his work and publications in Corrosion, born in Bethlehem, PA, Graduated with a BS from Penn State (1943) and a MS (1947) and a Ph.D (1949) from The Ohio State University, where he also acted as Director of Metals Research in the Engineering Experiment Station, Co-editor at the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (1962-1972), he also arranged technical programs with his students for both regional and national meetings of (N.A.C.E.), received numerous awards including outstanding publications In N.A.C.E. journal and the journal of the Electrochemical Society, David Ford McFarland Award for achievement for Metallurgy by the Penn State University chapter of ASM, MacQuigg Teaching award by OSU College of Engineering, Fontana teaching award by OSU Dept of Materials Science and Engineering, distinguished Alumnus award by OSU, life member of ASM and NACE Societies, NACE Fellow, registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio, registered Corrosion Specialist in NACE, listed in American Men of Science, member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Gamma Epsilon, Phi Eta Sigma and Phi Lambda Upsilon honor societies. Frank was also a researcher on the Manhattan Project developing the Uranium casings for the atomic bomb. He was also a longtime member of Overbrook Presbyterian Church.
The family received friends at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Sunday, February 24, 2008 from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m. Reverend William Leety officiating. No graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the OSU Dept. of Materials Science in Frank's memory.
