Dr. Smialowska's principal research interest has been the investigation of the kinetics and the mechanism of electrode processes, pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion inhibitors, hydrogen embrittlement, different types of aqueous corrosion at high temperatures, and passivity of various metals and alloys.

Dr. Smialowska joined the Ohio State faculty in March of 1982. She first came to Ohio State in 1973 for one year, and then again in 1978-79 for one and one-half years as a visiting scientist at the Fontana Corrosion Center. She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering at the Silesian Technical University in Gliwice, Poland. She served from 1952 to 1982 as professor and head of Corrosion and Electrochemistry Laboratory of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. She has authored over two hundred and sixty scientific papers on the above subjects along with several textbooks

Professional activities incude: Vice President of the International Electrochemical Society; President of the Polish Scientific Technical commitee for the protection of materials against corrosion; Member of the Scientific Board of the Institute of Physical Chemistry (Warsaw); Polish delegate to European Federation of Corrosion (EFC); Recipient of the Cavallaro Medal (for distinguished activity and publication in the field of corrosion); whilst also being named a Fellow of NACE. Dr. Smialowska is also a memebr of the Editorial board for the journal "Power Sources" and "Ochrona przed Korozja", whilst also active on the Executive Editorial Board of the international journal "Corrosion Science".
